La Haine - Analysis

La Haine is a purposely made black and white crime, drama film created in 1995 film Directed and Written by Mathieu Kassovitz. It had a budget of €2.5 million.
The film deals with many different themes as it is set over a period of 24 hours and follows 3 main protagonists after a riot within France. Its main themes are poverty, minority groups, racism, violence, respect and power.
Throughout the whole film, there are moments of a black screen with the time on it. this shows the audience that the time frame the film takes place in is a whole 24 hour cycle.

La Haine was actually filmed in colour, but was edited to black and white when in the post production stages of the film. This was because the director thought it would not do as well if it was released in colour. The black and white effect creates the atmosphere of social realism as the audience can focus on the issues that the film gets across, instead of them focusing on the vibrancy and beautiful aspects that France has to offer.

Starting with power, the characters live in an estate, that is looked down upon and no respected by anyone outside of it, so they believe that violence is one of the best ways to gain the respect they want.
Vinz has no respect for the police and people with authority. He is lead by hate and is obsessed with gaining a higher status than his other friends. This is why he has a gun and has it with him a lot, to give him status and power. The cinematography for this film shows who has power within each scene. Throughout the film, the status of authority goes in the order of Hubert, Vinz, then Said. This is shown through the cinematography, by the character who has the most authority in the scene, having more height in the shot or being closer to the camera. An example of this is a scene when the three characters are sitting on some concrete blocks, and Hubert is closest to the camera, then Vinz is behind him, and Said behind Vinz. This then changed when Vinz had an idea of what to do, when the camer moved from Hubert to a close up of Vinz.

The framing of shots was very important to the director. He uses it to show authority and the importance of specific items, such as the gun, and when it is in a scene, it is the centre of the frame, and all of the characters and scene is set around it, showing how important it is to the characters.

The police are represented in a bad way during the film, but may be accurate for the time and place where it was set. They are seen as agressive in many of the scenes. Within the last scene Vinz is accidentally shot by the police officer. This shows the audience how stupid and careless the police can be. They may have thought the characters from the estate are a lower class, therefore do not matter as much as them.

French films usually show Paris from a very different point of view. Paris is usually seen with all its landmarks, looking very posh and beautiful just like a postcard. But in this film it is seen from a ‘normal' point of view, from the eye of the people that live there. When the protagonists travel to Paris, all we see is the Eiffel Tower from a long distance. One of them even tries to click his fingers to switch off the lights but is told that it ‘only works in the movies’. Even though this is a movie, it doesn't work, which suggests how this film represents real life.

Narrative:
When a college student unfriends a mysterious girl online, she finds herself fighting a demonic presence that wants to make her lonely by killing her closest friends.
The film has a circular and non-linear narrative to it. At the start of the film, the audience do not know what is going on, then there is a flashback so the story is explained. The end of the film turns into a circular narrative. This brings a very good twist and ending to the story, and personally i felt very satisfied with the ending.

Analysis:
The music and sound effects within this film fits all the conventions of a horror films. The silence during eerie scene within the film was very intense and raw. The sudden crescendo of music when there is a jump scare makes the moment much more frightening for the audience because just moments before, there was practically no sound at all. The silence pulled the audience in, knowing something will happen, and because there was silence in the film, the audience join in and become silent too.

Analysis:
Performance is what makes this film what it is. Because there is not much dialog within the film, the actors have to use their body language and physical acting to get the emotions and story across to the audience. It is much harder for actors to get emotions across without using dialog and also make it believable. The close up shots of the protagonists face help the audience understand what emotions she is showing, and makes them feel more closer to her ad they can understand her through body language instead of dialog.

Production Company:
Warner Bros.
DC Entertainment Inc.

Narrative:
Fearing the actions of Superman are being left unchecked, Batman takes on the Man of Steel, while the world wrestles with what kind of hero it really needs.

Analysis:
Cinematography - The cinematography within this film is very unique and unlike anything i have ever seen. During the fight scenes, especially with Batman, there would be no change of camera shots. There was one long shot that travelled around the area following batman while he was fighting many people. This was very unique as it felt real and raw because the choreography would have to be superb for them to get it right within one shooting.

Responsibility - This is one of the main themes within the film, because both of the heroes have much power, especially superman, who has a responsibility to keep the world a safe place because he has the power to destroy it. The public/government have mixed feelings over Superman because he is so powerful, some see him as a threat and some see him as a hero.

Sound:
Sound is very unique within this films. There is lots of diagetic and non diagetic sound within the movie, including music to help build tensions and the atmosphere. At one point within the film, all the sound gets drained, and there is a ringing over the top. This was from the point of view of Michelle. It makes the audience react in the same way she did, because they are feeling and hearing what she is.

Crime, Drama

Themes:
Violence, death, crime, guilt, redemption, selfishness.

Running Time:
154 minutes

Year:
1994

Budget:
$8 million

Box Office:
$213 million

Narrative:
Pulp Fiction has a non-linear narrative, the story does not go in chronological order, as it follows different characters in their perspective at different times.
Two hitmen, Jules and Vincent are tying to retrieve a suitcase for their boss Marsellus, who also asked Vincent to take his wife out for dinner.

Themes Analysis:
Selfishness - Selfishness is a main theme within Butch's story, as he steals Marsellus' money and run away with it after they made a fair deal. Marsellus also paid Butch, a boxer, to lose his next fight. All of their unrelated stories get woven together in a series of funny, bizzare and uncalled for incidents.

Microfeatures:
Cinematography - The cinematography is very unique within this film, whenever Vince and Jules have scenes, the camera is sometimes at a low angle, showing how much power the two of them have. They also know they have power within the film, because they work for Marsellus. However, they are not the only characters that are shown from a low angle. Many characters that have guns and hold the power within their scene are shot from a low angle, for example, Ringo, who robs the restaurant at the end of the film, is shown from a low angle because he holds the power within the scene as he is the only one with a weapon.

Beachcomber - Film London 2014 Slate

A Beachomber is on a quest to find more than just treasure under the pebbles and stones on the beaches of Brighton.
Running Time - 14 minutes.

Analysis:
Music/Sound:
Throughout the film, there is very tranquil like, calming music. This goes well with Steven, because he is 65 and would want a slower, quieter, and simple life. To add to the calming music, the sound of the sea is very peaceful and smooth representing him again, and how peaceful he is alone, living by the sea, doing the same thing everyday, and not getting bored of it.

Cinematography:
The cinematography within this film is very warming. The establishing shots of the shore are really beautiful and soothing. The repeated establishing shots of the sea each morning shows the audience that nothing in his life is changing, and how each day is just the same as the last.

Parenthood
Marriage
Defence
Social Behaviour

Year:
2011

Running Time:
79 minutes

Production Company:
SBS Productions

Budget:
$25 million

Box Office:
$27 million

Narrative:
Two pairs of parents come together to discuss a dispute between their children. A film set in one room over the period of an 1 hour and 20 mins, we get to see how everything goes down hill, and how conversation can jump to different ones.

Themes analysis:
Parenthood is a main theme within this film because the characters act very formal and adult-like at the start of the film, being very kind to each other and making the situation very calm and easy to the handle. Then throughout the film, they seem to lose the parent-like attitude and everything goes downhill. They seem to turn into children themselves.

Social Behaviour is another themes within the movie, because it shows how people really act. It is quite an accurate representation of how people react to certain things that are said or what someone had done. People react and act in different ways and the movie shows that. Christopher Waltz's character is very calm and reacts very bluntly and sarcastically to what is said, while Jodie Foster's character cries when everything gets too much for her.

What Richard Did - Film Analysis

What Richard Did is a 2013 Irish Drama, directed by Lenny Abrahamson, and written by Malcolm Campbell, produced by Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe. The music was by Steven Rennicks and the cinematography was by David Grennan. The film runs for 88 minutes and it has a rating of 15. Its cast includes Jack Reynor (Richard Karlsen), Fionn Walton (Cian Fox), Gavin Drea (Stephen O'Brien), Patrick Gibson (Jake Galvin) and Liana O'Cleirigh (Clodagh Grady). The films budget was not that big, but it brought in nearly $500,000 in the box office.

Music:
The film had hardly any music, and whenever there was music, it was really faint and subtle. Music within films normally brings excitement helps the audience feel a certain emotion, but with this film, there wasn't any music to do this, so the audience can have their own view and feel the emotion they want to based around the events they see. The film is a representation of real life, so no music was needed, and to make it a true representation, the director would have wanted the raw sound of each scene, especially during the silent scenes, where there would be no dialog.

Editing:
the editing within this film was the main thing that really stood out to me. Especially at the end of one scene, the audio for the next one would overlap onto it, making the transitions very slick. The longs scenes of no dialog added to the atmosphere the whole film is giving off, you know from the start that something isn't right. For me, the whole film seemed to have some sort of tint of colour on it, or the colours have been brightened and faded in some places and during some scenes. Some scenes would seem more blue, and others green. Blue means trust, loyalty, faith and heaven. These scenes were mainly when Richard was alone with his girlfriend, and because blue is a calming colour, it is showing they are comfortable with each other.

In other scenes, I saw a green sort of tint to them, especially during the scene where Richard is talking to his father outside. Green means safety, life, energy, fertility and environment. This makes sense during this scene because Richard should feel safe talking to his father about what he did.
The film seemed quite 'slow' and boring until Richard got into the fight with Conor, but the slowness adds to the reality of it. It is a representation of real life, and real life is slow in general.

Narrative:

Music:
The music from this film is unlike many others. Other films don't normally have lyrics to their music but in deadpool, it does. It adds to the 'cool' look that he is giving off and unlike a superhero he actually is, because no one would expect that type of music in a film like that. The non Diagetic music still drives adrenaline through the audience, creating them to feel different types of emotions at certain points within the film.

Comparison - Inglourious Basterds & Miracle at St Anna

Inglourious Basterds:
Inglourious Basterds is a 2009 War film directed and written by Quentin Tarantino. The film is 2 hours 33 minutes long and it falls under the genres of Action, Drama and War. The Production Company for this film was Universal Pictures.  Its budget was $75 million and it went on to make $321 million in the Box Office. Some of its cast include Brad Pitt, Melanie Laurent, Christoph Waltz, Eli Roth, Michael Fassbender and Diane Kruger.

Miracle at St Anna:
Miracle at St. Anna is a 2008 War film directed by Spike Lee. The film is 2 hours 40 minutes long and falls under the genres of Action, Crime, War and Drama. Its Production Company was 40 Acres & aA Mule Filmworks. Its budget was $45 million and it made $9 million at the Box Office. Its cast includes actors such as Derek Luke, Michael Ealy, Laz Alonzo, Omar Benson Miller and Pierfrancesco Favino.

Both of these film are very similar, both being set in world war 2 and following its main events, and are both within the war genre. Even though these two film are similar, they are also quiet different. Inglourious Basterds follows the story of a Jewish girl with history with one of the Nazi Leaders, and also a group of Jewish U.S. Soldiers through France. Miracle at St. Anna follows a group of black U.S. soldiers thought the town of Italy. Even though these films follow very different points of view, they ultimately show the same main themes, which are discrimination and hate. For example, Inglourious Basters deals with the Jews being hated and killed in Germany, and also black people being hated as well. An example of this is the Jewish girl that owns the cinema, hosting a German film premiere, has a black man working for her. A nazi leader told her that she cannot have him working that night when the premiere takes place. Miracle at St. Anna deals with racial hatred and an example of this would be the black soldiers not being served in the cafe. Also black people weren't treated as fairly as white people were. They seemed to be used in war as targets for the enemy. In some senses, they were sent to be killed.

The way these films were shown are in different ways. Inglourious Basterds has a linear structure. The story starts at the beginning and carries on chronologically all the way through even though there is a 3 year gap. Miracle at St. Anna is set as a flashback, which is a non linear narrative. The man at the beginning and the end is in the 'current day' when the movie was set and the story flashes back to his memories of what happened.

Abuse & neglect:
Abuse is a main theme within this film and is what the story revolves around. Precious is abused by her mother, who doesn't care about her. She makes precious do dinner for her, and if she doesn't like it, she makes precious eat it herself.  Her mother sits at home all day watching tv, making precious get food for and jobs to pay the bills. Her mother let her boyfriend have sex with precious and have had 2 babies together. She gets laughed at at school and bullied by students. She is unloved, hated, poor and angry.
